503-823-3636 | | | | | Description: These terraced gardens rise above Portland, offering great views of the city - that is, if you can keep from marveling at the gorgeous specimens all around. Instituted in 1917, the gardens give trial runs to various rose hybrids before they're introduced into the mass market. With over 8000 plants representing more than 400 different species, you're certain to find at least one that captivates you. Should you find yourself tempted, however, know that it's illegal to pick any of the blooms. Summer is the best time to visit the displays and is also when you'll find a repertoire of seasonal concerts available in the gardens. The Washington Park Rose Garden Store opened in 2000, and offers unususal items for both the home and garden.

(503) 222-6072 | | | | | Description: Browse the market and shop for everything from watercolors and pottery to homemade marionberry jam and jewelry, then treat yourself to an elephant ear or some pad thai. If you hit the food court near closing time, the prices sometimes get lower--and the portions get a whole lot bigger--as vendors try to clean out their stock before closing up for the day. The main stage in the food court features local musical and dance performances every Saturday and Sunday, 11:30am-4pm. Styles range from bluegrass to jazz, and rock to ethnic.
